Bari Hamami has been the CEO of PT Trakindo Utama (“Trakindo”) since 2008. Trakindo was founded in 1970 by Met Hamami (Bari’s Father) as a Caterpillar heavy equipment Distributor for Indonesia and East Timor. With a proud 45 years journey, Trakindo has grown today into a company that actively contributes to Indonesia’s national development and provides quality employment for more than 6,000 employees throughout Indonesia. Trakindo is committed to delivering excellence and enabling progression towards success, consistent with its brand aspiration which is to advance its stakeholders forward.
For Bari Hamami, being an entrepreneur is a passion to take any opportunity which is being presented in front of him that he can choose, something that has to live with his own passion, do what he really likes and achieve results that can impact more for others rather than just himself. In his current role, he considers himself doing both the entrepreneur and professional role. He believes that entrepreneurship cannot stand alone on its own, but professionalism has to go hand in hand in running a business successfully. Running a business requires several traits such as the ability to take risks, being a visionary and the determination to face reality and challenges, while continuing to stay humble.
Prior to being appointed President Director of Trakindo in 2008, he has served as Director for Administrative Affairs at Trakindo from 2001, responsible for various strategic functions at the Company including Human Resources, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), Corporate Purchasing, Safety, Health and Environment, 6Sigma Corporate Deployment and also Corporate Communication.
After completion of his undergraduate study in manufacturing Engineering & Industrial Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, he obtained a Master degree in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University, New York, in 1995. He then joined the Management Development Program at Caterpillar Inc., USA, for two and a half years, where he studied various manufacturing and commercial aspects of Caterpillar business.
He returned to Indonesia in 1998, and immediately joined Trakindo as the Assistant General Manager of the Mining Division. During that period, he was also involved as Project Manager for the implementation of SAP ERP at six subsidiaries within the Trakindo Group. Following the restructuring of Trakindo Group in 2001, he was appointed as the Administration Director of the company. During that time, he personally introduced and promoted the use of 6Sigma methodology and Balanced Scorecard system throughout the organization. Currently, the methodology and business process have become the foundation for the Company’s Strategic Management Development program and guides the work processes within the Company. Today he is CEO of PT Trakindo Utama.
In 2010, he and the other Executive Board members developed the company’s “Vision 2015” that set the five-year strategic direction and transformation for the company. The sets of strategies focus on developing new capabilities for growth and profitability. To date, more than 40 major projects has been conducted and implemented and the result has been monumental for the company. He believes that without doing any business transformation Trakindo may not able to sustain its market share, revenue and profitability levels in the midst of a very short cyclical market condition. Many new capabilities in the area of marketing and the supply chain has elevated its business performances and has allowed the company to weather all challenges in the last few years, double its turnover and even more, Trakindo has consistently increased its market share for the last five years in a row. In addition, Trakindo has also continuously improved its customer satisfaction level through regular survey given to the customer in every transaction they have made with the company.
As part of enhancing the enabling infrastructure for growth, Bari led his team to successfully revamp the business system using a new ERP base systems along with new CRM capabilities. The strategic investment was not solely limited on the business system, per se, but also several re-engineering approaches of the company’s business process capabilities. In the area of Human Capital, due to his previous role as Trakindo’s Human Capital Director, he revamped the fundamental talent management capabilities that have now made Trakindo to become one of the most sought after employers in the industry. Trakindo has also managed to develop a comprehensive career development curriculum for its technicians which was successfully received the recognition by the government as a National standard curriculum in its industry. The curriculum was designed based on the spirit of “character based” curriculum that stimulates not only the technical element of the employee’s competency level but more importantly the Character/ Ethical side of the individual as a professional which is aligned with the quote, “Knowledge is Power but Character is More”.
Today, Trakindo has received many acknowledgements from the government, its customers and the industries through many awards based on its achievements so far and strive to continuously “go the extra Mile”.
In business, Bari’s main motto is to continuously “Make it Happen”. In addition to his current role at PT Trakindo Utama, Bari currently serves as the Director of the Tiara Marga Trakindo (parent company of PT Trakindo Utama), and as Commissioner of PT Chitra Paratama (distributor of Michelin tires) and Commissioner of PT Mahadana Dasha Utama. Bari is married with two children
